Here’s one travel cost I can tell you from personal experience I wouldn’t give up: Travel insurance.  If you have to cut your trip short for a family emergency or one of you gets sick or injured—as has happened to us on the ski slopes—or you have to cancel your trip because of an emergency at home, your out of pocket costs are covered.  You have a variety of options. Check http://www.travelguard.com for new plans that you can customize for your needs (I usually just opt for emergency medical coverage) and http://www.insuremytrip to compare policies.
