Eileen’s Fall Foliage Picks

Colorado
Colorado is not just for skiing.  The fall season offers lots of outdoor festivals and the mountain resorts are a great place for mountain biking, biking and nature walks. Sample Aspen glitz, where you can get a voucher for up to $50 in gas from Aspen’s local station when you book two nights at a participating Aspen lodge. http://www.Aspenchamber.org

Hike or mountain bike to a back country hut where you can overnight. http://www.huts.org

At Beaver Creek, hike with a guide, go mountain biking or horseback riding or indulge in a spa treatment. http://www.beaavercreek.com

In Durango, ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train and see incredible colors or explore the ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. http://www.Durango.org .

New England
New England is the quintessential fall foliage destination but this region is also a great place for some new and unique ways to get a different view of the leaves.

In New Hampshire, go rock climbing to view leaves from a mountain top; or visit “Pickity Place,” a 200-year-old cottage illustrated in the original story of Little Red Riding Hood, where travelers can feast on a gourmet lunch at “grandmother’s house” while enjoying the view http://www.pickityplace.com

Hike from the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center at the base of Mt. Washington, New England’s tallest peak, where there are plenty of family activities http://www.outdoors.org

In Vermont, pick your own apples at one of the state’s many orchards. http://www.vermontapples.com

Soar above the leaves in a glider in Stowe, Vt (http://www.stowesoaring.com) or bungee jumpoff a trampoline.(http://www.stowe.com)

Stay north of Stowe at Smugglers Notch Resort and there’s organized day care for the babies in the gang. http://www.smuggs.com

In Massachusetts, build sand castles on the quiet Cape Cod beaches (http://www.capecodchamber.org) or bike for miles past marshes and cranberry bogs on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. http://www.ccrailtrail.com

Check out the special fall activities at the living history museums Old Sturbridge Village (http://www.osv.org) and Plimouth Plantation (http://www.plimouth.org)

Our National Parks (link to national parks from http://www.nps.gov)
The Zion National Park in Utah is a great fall destination where the weather is pleasant and autumn arrives later than in much of the country, often resulting in the leaves’ yellows and reds creating a dramatic contrast to the spectacular backdrop of the canyon walls.

The International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota offers a Wolf Pack Family Weekend in October that includes a wolf-howling expedition, wolf track-casting, a north woods hike and observation of the International Wolf Center’s ambassador wolf pack. http://www.wolf.org

The Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming offers wildlife watching and hiking programs during the fall. “Fall is the time when wildlife watching can be most fascinating,” said Jeff Brown, educational director of the Yellowstone Association Institute. “Cooler temperatures bring many animals back down from the higher elevations, the elk are bugling, and the bears are consuming enormous amounts of food in preparation for winter hibernation.”

You can beat the heat—and the crowds—if you visit the Grand Canyon and Arizona’s other sites in the fall. Opt for a ResortQuest condo in Arizona and you can get a free gas card. http://www.resortquest.com

Utah
Utah offers great lodging deals throughout Utah’s resorts in the fall and it’s a great time for cool weather mountain biking and hiking in Park City (http://www.parkcityinfo.com) and Snowbird (http://www.snowbird.com), among other places.  Lodging is a steal too. The state offers 325+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails to take in the wonderful scenery.www.utah.com

Take a drawing or photography making workshop at Sundance Resort. http://www.sundance.com

Oregon
Parents looking for a romantic getaway this fall while still traveling with the kids should consider the beautiful Oregon wine country. Oregon’s wine country is home to some of the most prized Pinot Noirs in the world. Parents will also enjoy taking the kids to one of Oregon’s numerous family run farms in the morning. The kids can pick their own pumpkins. http://www.traveloregon.com

Canada
Canada is a great fall destination from Montreal to Vancouver.  What’s more, with the currency exchange, you save 20 per cent with the dollar. Vancouver is one of my favorite cities—spectacularly beautiful, great shopping and restaurants and at the same time close to outdoor adventures. http://www.tourismvancouver.com or http://www.travelcanada.com

  1. Why are there no diections to the Pickety Place offer to visit the Little Red Riding Hood/Grandmother’s House as you stated on Fox 25 News, 10/12/05.  I researched your website and got nothing.  Is this just a rip off so you can claim the number of people logging on to your site, thus padding those numbers and not offering full disclosure of the necessary information? I woul really like a response from you or is this just another advertising scam?
