Eileen finishing up her ride on the coaster at Breck

Hazel, 8, adds rock to a cairn originally begun by the 10th Mountain Division during World War II training
It feels as if I have the entire mountain with its fresh snow all to myself—and it’s Saturday. Welcome to Ski Cooper, just outside of Leadville with 39 trails and four lifts spanning 400 lift-served acres and no artificial snow more

Fall is a fine time to take the kids and family to see Colorado’s beauty

A family reunion on the snow in Colorado

Hiking App Trail in Rain in NH 1997
There were round-robin emails in the weeks before the trip in which we discussed the menus and shopping lists. My husband, raised in Texas, brought his “famous” chili, frozen from home, and my British sister-in-law the ingredients for Shepherd’s Pie. more

In Fairplay CO: Dorothy’s Tamales, a hidden mountain gem

Dorothy and her tamales
We heard about Dorothy’s from our daughter Mel, an avid skier and Colorado College student who would stop often on her forays to the mountains. So when were casting about for somewhere to go for lunch—not that there aren’t many choices in Breckenridge!—we thought of Dorothy’s. It was a beautiful blue-sky day and the mountain views on the drive over were fantastic. more

No matter how old, Breck brings out the kid in you

Chris and his cousin Melanie at the top of a Breckenridge Peak
At 31 years young, I found myself completely gassed on the slopes trying to keep up with my 22-year-old cousin Melanie Yemma (a senior at Colorado College). I’m a fan of breaks – even naps – but apparently when you’re 22 and you live in Colorado, you don’t take breaks on the mountain. more
