Experience Virginia A New Way with the Capital Trail

The Virginia Capital Trail is a dedicated, paved pedestrian/bicycle trail that connects the Commonwealth’s past and present capitals of Jamestown and Richmond along the Scenic Route 5 corridor. The Trail stretches approximately 52 miles, four jurisdictions, and more than 400 years of history along one of the first inland routes in North America. The 8-10 foot wide trail was built as a sustainable means of transportation for people to get around as an alternative to riding on the roads, and to connect all of the counties in between. As the trail crosses through several counties, you will discover the many personalities of the Virginia Capital Trail including urban, suburban, rural, commercial, agricultural and historic. In addition to the trail itself, along the entire path there are 24 Civil War sites as well as a number of historic James River plantations including Shirley, Berkley, Westover and a few others.
