The Gullah/Geechee people of South Carolina’s Sea Islands have the best- preserved heritage of African-American communities in the United States. Today, the native islanders still make Gullah dishes and weaving baskets that they share with visitors.

Two of the best ways for kids to experience the Sea Islands and Gullah culture are:

1. A Gullah Heritage Trail Tour

This is on Hilton Head Island and fourth- and fifth-generation Gullah guides bring the history of the natives to life.

2. Sallie Ann Robinson Gullah Tour

Ms. Robinson is a renowned chef and native islander. She leads this tour on Daufuskie Island that is home to a dozen historic landmarks.
