The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, bordering North Carolina and Tennessee, is preparing for its annual synchronous fireflies event. It usually takes place in late May or early June and multitudes of fireflies travel through the night sky as their abdomens glow and flash together.
GSMNP is home to 19 different firefly species whose light patterns are part of a mating ritual. There will be a parking lottery, where visitors can win a spot for their vehicle, on April 24-28, 2020.
They will notify applicants in May if they have won or not. Learn more here.
