DAY TWO : Are your kids museum aficionados?
Whether they like cars or art or space, you’ll find plenty to engage them at San Diego’s Balboa Park right in downtown and home to 15 major museums, performing arts venues, the world-famous San Diego Zoo and plenty of place for kids to turn cartwheels.
We all know that San Diego is home to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld but we may not realize there are so many museums that because they are in one urban park are so easy to visit (you can also buy a park passport that’s good for a week–$49 for adults and $27 for kids 12 and younger.
Take your pick:
–Have noodles at the Japanese Tea Pavilion and then wander through the Japanese Friendship Garden
–Check out the folk art in the Mingie Museum.
–Take your budding shutter bugs to the Museum of Photography.
–Give the kids perspective on the history of San Diego that dates back to the 16th century at the San Diego History Center.
–See how science and art interact at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Kids will love Kid City and the IMA
–The San Diego Natural History Museum focuses on the natural history of Southern California.
—The San Diego Art Institute and the San Diego Museum of Art and the Timken Museum of Art.
Let’s not forget the famous Old Globe a leading regional theater as well as the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, the San Diego Junior Theater and the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater with marionettes, hand and shadow puppets.
The entrance to the San Diego Zoo is here too but it would be a shame to miss the chance to check out a museum or two or three while you are here.
Just make sure to ask the kids which museums are on their list. And let them lead the way.
